NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (Jan. 23, 2024) – Community leaders are remembering a former New Philadelphia mayor who passed away over the weekend.

Greg Erb died Saturday at the age of 71 under the care of Community Hospice. He was New Philadelphia’s mayor from 1996 to 1999.

At Monday night’s city council meeting, Mayor Joel Day described Erb as a friend and a mentor who made the city better because of his efforts.

“Mayor Erb was a very passionate man, if you did not know him,” Day said. “He loved God, New Philadelphia, and America, and he had his own way of reminding you of that.”

Law Director Marvin Fete says he temporarily served as an executive assistant to Erb.  Fete said Erb was “very forward-thinking.”

“I learned so much from him,” said Fete. “He was probably the smartest man I’ve ever met.”

“The things that he envisioned and pushed for and advocated for are things that we are just now doing,” Fete added.

Erb is survived by his wife Kimberly. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Linn Hert Geib Funeral Home in New Philadelphia. Calling hours will be at the funeral home that morning from 9 a.m. until the time of services.
