Garaway to induct latest class in to Wall of Fame
Garaway High School will induct the newest members of the Garaway Wall of Fame on Friday, Jan. 17, 2025, in between the JV and varsity boys’ games vs. Claymont.
The inductees are:
1959-1960 Boys basketball team – a truly outstanding Garaway team that won the Tuscarawas County Class A League as well as the Tuscarawas County tournament. Overall record of 22-2, regular season record of 17-1, league record of 17-0. Team members: Tom Dannis, Bob Raber, Charlie Stingel, Tom Andreas, Jim Gerber, Bud Yakley, Koran Zehnder, Bill Yakley, Bob Tidrick. The tournament team included Bob Kimmel, George Shepler, Jarret Gray, and Dan Bleininger. Manager: Sid Schaar. Coaches: Jim Stull, Bill Ray, and Dick Kent
Dr. Koran Zehnder (basketball)– 1960 graduate of Garaway High School. In the top five career scoring leaders at Garaway and held the top scoring mark for over twenty years, currently stands at No. 10 all time with 1029 points. A 4-year starter on the basketball team, was the 1960 Tuscarawas County League MVP and was honorable mention all-Ohio.
Charles Stingel (basketball) – 1960 graduate of Garaway High School. A four-year letterman and starting center for the Pirates, who still holds the Garaway career rebounding record of 949. He was a three-time Tuscarawas county all-star in basketball. Honorable mention all-Ohio 1960.
Tom Andreas (basketball coach) – 1961 graduate of Garaway High School, basketball head coach from 1967-1975 (record of 110-38). Won 5 league titles, 7 sectional titles, 1 district title, 6 Tuscarawas County Tournament championships, and coached 1 regional final team. Coached basketball for 25 years at Garaway and Dover (13 boys teams and 12 girls teams). He is a member of the Ohio HS Basketball HOF (1998) and the Dover HS Hall of Fame (2024).
Ron Kelly (volleyball coach) – Garaway volleyball coach from 1981-1996, with a record of 221-114. Led 2 teams to the regional tournament (1991,1993) and won 3 IVC championships (1991, 1992, 1995). Voted District V Coach of the Year in 1985 and 1991, coached 7 Garaway all-Ohio volleyball players. Coached volleyball for 34 total years with a record of 316-264 (Garaway, Barnesville, St. John Central, Union Local, and Bridgeport).
Tammie Youngen (volleyball/basketball) – 1986 graduate of Garaway High, won 10 total varsity letters (volleyball, basketball, track). In volleyball, 1985 honorable mention all-Ohio, a district V Player of the Year, and took part in the 1985 Ohio all-star match. In basketball, was 3rd team all-Ohio in 1986, still holds the single game scoring record of 42 points, is #6 all time in scoring with 1,184 career points. Played volleyball at Ohio Northern University, leading her team to 1989 Division 3 NCAA runner-up finish.
Gerald “Bud” Yakley and Larry “Butch” Yakley (contributors) – Butch was a 1959 Garaway graduate who ran the clock for the football team from 1967-2002, kept the book for boys basketball from 1967-1975, and again from 1994-2003 until his passing. Bud is a 1961 Garaway graduate who also ran the clock for the football team from 1967-2017 as well as the clock for boys basketball from 1967-1975 and again from 1991-2006. Bud also ran the clock for the girls basketball team from 1977-2006. Bud and Butch gave countless hours and service to Garaway Schools.
