Gas station attack suspect’s case heads to grand jury, clerk still recovering

39-year-old John A. McNutt of Dover

NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) – A grand jury will consider formal charges against the suspect in last week’s Speedway gas station robbery in Dover where the clerk was attacked.

39-year-old John A. McNutt waived his preliminary hearing in New Philadelphia Municipal Court Wednesday on charges from a criminal complaint including attempted murder and aggravated robbery.

McNutt was accused of using a hammer in the December 9th incident that left the clerk with head injuries. She was treated and released that evening.

Dover Safety Director Bob Everett informed City Council this week that the clerk is still recovering.

“As Detective Jason Peters put it, she’s basically a walking miracle. So we certainly wish our best to her as she recovers from this tragic incident that should never happen to anyone,” said Everett.

Everett also praised all the Dover officers involved with the response and investigation, along with New Philadelphia for providing mutual aid.

“Frankly to receive a call like this and in a little over three hours have someone in custody and end up arresting the individual is what I would call record time, and that was very astonishing,” Everett said.

McNutt remains in the Tuscarawas County Jail. Judge Nan VonAllman continued his bond Wednesday at $500,000.
