Girls Soccer: Dover advances in postseason with shutout
The Dover girls soccer team defeated Coshocton 5-0 Thursday to win a sectional championship and advance in the Division II postseason. The Crimson Tornadoes’ next game is Tuesday, Oct. 26, at 6:30 p.m. against Lisbon Beaver at Minerva.
Dover Girls Soccer Coach James Kline:
Last night, the No. 3 seed Dover Tornadoes hosted the No. 12 seed Coshocton Redskins in the Sectional Championship.
We had a week off from playing games which is never good. From the kickoff we controlled the game though, but you could tell that our touch and feel for the intensity of play was off. Plus, it’s the playoffs, everyone is going to be playing their best now because the consequences of not, are the end of your season.
Thankfully, we settled into the game and knocked off the rust with seven and half minutes left in the first half when Bridget McCrate played a nice through ball to Emilyn Feller who settled the ball and beat the keeper to her front post. It was great to see Emilyn get a goal since she has battled a quad injury since our fourth game.
It was tough to get the first one, but we knew once we got that first goal more would come. We were right because four minutes later, Cashlyn Harmon took a ball redirected off a goal kick by Miley Patton and hit a great shot outside the 18 to the side netting with three minutes left in the half.
During the halftime talk, we just discussed continuing the pressure and switched our formation to add another forward to give us a more balanced attack. The girls continued the pressure and the added attacker made our attack more balanced and dangerous which led to a quick goal. Four minutes into the second half Belen Bravo-Angel received a short pass from a corner kick and played a very dangerous pass across the box that Carley Noretto redirected into the back of the net for her 10th goal of the season.
Shortly after that goal, Cashlyn intercepted the ball off a goal kick and again hit a hard well placed shot past the goalkeeper for her second goal of the game. Seven minutes after that, with 23 minutes left in the game we scored our last goal of the game when Belen Bravo-Angel made a nice pass into space that Kenzie Wright took two nice touches through the defense and beat the keeper for her second goal of the season. Overall, we performed well and got off to a nice start to the playoffs.
With the win, the Dover Tornadoes won the Sectional Championship for the second year in a row and have now moved into the District Semifinals on Tuesday, Oct. 26, where we will play the No. 6 seed Beaver Local at 6:30 p.m.
