Grand Jury indicts driver for passenger’s death in 2020 Dover crash

Police arrest Larry A. Short arrested in Dover following a crash at East Third and Cross Street.

NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (February 16, 2022) – A Tuscarawas County grand jury has indicted a 28-year-old Uhrichsville man on aggravated vehicular homicide and other charges for a 2020 crash in Dover.

The indictment filed Monday in Tuscarawas County Common Pleas Court says Larry A. Short caused the death of Joseph DeMattio, a passenger in the vehicle Short was driving Aug. 27, 2020, when he ran a stop sign and crashed into an SUV at the corner of East Third and Cross Street. DeMattio, the SUV driver and Short’s other passenger were injured in the crash.

Prosecutors initially charged Short with aggravated vehicular assault. They added aggravated vehicular homicide, a second-degree felony, when DeMattio died from his injuries in December.

The grand jury also indicted Short for failure to stop at the scene of an accident. Police say he fled the crash scene on foot but was arrested a block over a short time later. Police say Short was on probation at the time and ran the stop sign after seeing a Dover Police officer.

Short has pleaded not guilty. He is scheduled for a telephone pretrial March 14.
