NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (Aug. 27, 2025) – The man who New Philadelphia Police say fled from a crash that killed his passenger early Saturday morning has waived a preliminary hearing in New Philadelphia Municipal Court.

A grand jury will now consider whether to indict 37-year-old Janesh Cabrera Vargas – who has been listed in court records as being from New Philadelphia and Virginia.

Police Chief Tessa Pohovey has said he’s accused of being the driver of the Dodge Charger that crashed into a pole while apparently racing on South Broadway at about 2 a.m. Saturday, killing 21-year-old Terron Henderson of New Philadelphia.

Bond was continued at $50,000 dollars for Cabrera Vargas at Tuesday’s hearing. He remains in the Tuscarawas County Jail on initial charges including aggravated vehicular homicide and OVI.
