DOVER (WJER) (Oct. 19, 2023) – Dover and New Philadelphia football fans were rolling up their sleeves Wednesday to score a win for their team and the patients at Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital.

Dover grad Susan Penrod was among the Tornadoes supporters who participated in the 26th Rivalry Blood Battle at the Tuscarawas County YMCA.

“I think it’s a great thing. I know blood is needed pretty badly.”

Autumn Mastrione added a donation for her alma mater. She went to New Phila and is the mother of two young Quakers.

“Growing up in Phila it’s always been a rivalry, and I think having the opportunity to give in this way as a mom since I can’t play in the game or do anything else is great. I love it.”

The collection was for the hospital’s blood supplier – Vitalent Ohio. Account Manager Katie Neff says the donations couldn’t come at a better time.

“Currently, we’re in critical appeal for blood, especially O but we need all blood types. We have a one to two-day supply right now for our area hospitals here in Ohio, so every donation counts.”

The winning team will be announced Friday during the big game at Crater Stadium. Dover has 14 Blood Battle wins to date compared to 10 for New Phila.
