Gunnoe to remain Dover’s mayor; other incumbents ousted

| November 8, 2023

The unofficial results are in for the November 7th general election:

On the candidate side, Shane Gunnoe will remain Dover’s mayor in the new year. The incumbent Republican was leading Democratic challenger Colby Byrom by more than 1,100 votes with all but two of Tuscarawas County’s 81 precincts reporting.

Port Washington Mayor Thomas Gardner is the only other incumbent mayor in a contested race leading in the preliminary totals. In Bolivar, Tedd Finlayson is trailing council member Robert Lloyd by 14 votes. In Midvale, Doug Cross is leading Larry Kopp 13 to 7, and Strasburg Mayor Steve Smith is losing to challenger Bruce Metzger by more than 160 votes.

In Uhrichsville’s mayoral race, at-large city councilman Jim Zucal came out ahead on election night, beating Republican Suzanne Bower 592 to 366.

Locally, the only tax issue that’s failing is Strasburg’s police protection levy, which was down by 16 votes in the preliminary totals.

All outcomes are unofficial until the Tuscarawas County Board of Elections meets to add in any validated provisional ballots and mail-in votes that arrive after election day.

As for the two statewide issues in this election, both were passing with around 56 – percent of the vote on election night. Issue 1 guarantees the right to abortion and other forms of reproductive health care. Issue 2 legalizes and taxes marijuana for Ohioans 21 and older.
