High school sports update to start the new year

In IVC basketball, Tuscarawas Central Catholic’s girls are 6-0 to lead the North.

Strasburg is right behind with a 10-1 overall record. Last weekend, Strasburg picked up wins over Fredricktown and Mansfield senior thanks to Riley Thomas. She had 25 points and 10 rebounds in one win, then 17 and 8 in the next.

In the South, Hiland and Tusky Valley are both undefeated in IVC play. They play Wednesday at Hiland.

For the boys, Garaway was cruising along until Claymont handed the pirates their first loss last week. Brody Moreland scored 13 to lead the mustangs to the 44-43 upset of Garaway. Now the Pirates and Sandy Valley both have one loss in IVC play to lead the North. In the South, Malvern leads with a 9-0 record, 6-0 in conference play.

On New Year’s Eve, Strasburg’s boys beat Tuscarawas Central Catholic 52-51 behind 20 points from Gage Moore.

Dover and New Philadelphia teams get back to work this week.

New Philadelphia’s boys have games scheduled for Tuesday at Mount Vernon and Friday at home against Mansfield Senior. New Phila’s girls play Thursday at home against Madison Comprehensive.

For Dover, it’s wrestling tonight. The Tornadoes host Claymont.

The Dover girls’ basketball team hosts Massillon Wednesday. The Dover boys are in Wheeling Park Saturday.

Indian Valley’s boys bowling team beat Claymont with huge games from Colton Long – a 277 game and 476 series – and Daniel Grewell – a 265 game and 445 series.

Indian Valley’s girls won over Claymont, led by Sarah Myers 332 series.
