Highway Patrol Ride-Alongs Boost Trooper Recruitment
NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (Sept. 23, 2026) – The Ohio State Highway Patrol is using its ride-along program to give prospective troopers a close look at life on the road. At the New Philadelphia Post, Lt. Brian Sponaugle says they host seven to ten ride‑alongs a month, letting potential applicants shadow a trooper on any shift — day, afternoon or night — for a few hours or a full eight-hour rotation.
Participants must meet basic applicant standards, including being 18 to 39 years old and holding a valid driver’s license. They also sit down for a brief interview with the post commander to demonstrate genuine interest in becoming a trooper. Once approved, they can ride as often as they’d like.
