Horse in Mineral City Tests Positive for West Nile Virus
DOVER (WJER) (Sept. 25, 2026) – A horse in the Mineral City area has tested positive for West Nile virus, according to the Tuscarawas County Health Department.
Health officials say the case is a sign that West Nile virus is circulating among local mosquitoes. Horses do not spread the virus directly to people or other horses, but an infected horse indicates the presence of infected mosquitoes in the area.
Residents are encouraged to protect themselves by using insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and pants outdoors, avoiding mosquitoes around dawn and dusk, and eliminating standing water where mosquitoes can breed.
Horse owners are urged to talk with their veterinarians about West Nile vaccination and to seek veterinary care if a horse develops weakness, stumbling, muscle tremors or other neurological symptoms.
Most people infected with West Nile virus have no symptoms. About 20 percent develop a fever and symptoms such as headache, body aches, vomiting, diarrhea or a rash. Older adults and people with certain health conditions are at greater risk for serious illness.
