‘It’s a real tragedy’ – Mother- and daughter-in-law were pinned between vehicles

| October 5, 2026

NEW PHILADELPHIA – Tuscarawas County Sheriff Orvis Campbell says the deaths of two women found pinned between two vehicles on Sunday was a tragic accident.

Campbell says the two women – a mother- and daughter-in-law from the Uhrichsville area – had craft exhibits at the Atwood Lake Area Fall Festival and were driving from the festival in separate pickup trucks.

He says they stopped at the Atwood Dairy Bar off State Route 212, most likely to address an open door on one of the vehicles.

He says camera footage shows the two getting out of the trucks and standing between them when the second vehicle, which was not in park, began moving forward, pinning them between the pickup trucks.

A passing motorist discovered them unresponsive just after 9:30 p.m. and called 9-1-1. Campbell says they had been trapped for about two hours.

Responding deputies were able to separate the vehicles and performed CPR, but the women were later pronounced dead at an area hospital.

“It’s a real tragedy. A family lost two family members in one brief moment,” Campbell said. “I just think it’s the worst of all scenarios, and my thoughts go out to the family.”

Campbell says the coroner will rule on the cause and manner of death and release the identities of the victims.
