Jodi Salvo to challenge Brett Hillyer for State Rep

| December 5, 2023

BOLIVAR (WJER) (December 5, 2023) – One of Tuscarawas County’s leading voices for substance abuse prevention and addiction treatment is seeking a larger platform in state government.

Jodi Salvo has announced her plans to run for State Representative. She says she will challenge incumbent Brett Hillyer for the Republican nomination for the 51st District in the March 19 primary.

Salvo is the coordinator for Empower Tusc, formerly known as the anti-drug coalition, and the director of substance use prevention services for OhioGuidestone, a nonprofit behavioral health care provider.

She says her work often takes her to Columbus to address policy making at the state level.

“I’ve really learned the importance of well-crafted legislation to really protect communities, but I have also really understood that, my goodness, every single rural voice needs to be heard. Those conservative voices need to be heard,” Salvo said.

She says she hasn’t agreed with Hillyer in the past year.

“I feel that I can better represent our conservative views in Columbus,” she said. “Maybe a little bit of a frustration started on Jan. 3 when Brett was instrumental in a nomination for the current speaker of the house which was against the Republican caucus.”

Hillyer did not immediately return a phone message. The deadline for candidates to declare for the March primary is Dec. 20.
