Late Sunday fire contained to kitchen area of New Philadelphia home
NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (Sept. 26, 2022) – The quick actions of the owners and firefighters kept a kitchen fire from spreading throughout the rest of a home in the 1000 block of Logan Street Northwest late Sunday.
Assistant Chief Matt Tharp says someone at the single-story ranch-style home called 911 just before 11:30 pm.
The caller reported hearing a loud pop in the kitchen, smelled smoke, and got everyone out.
He says once outside the residents could see flames coming from a window while firefighters were on their way.
Tharp saw a similar sight upon arrival.
“We had some dark smoke coming out of the eves of the building,” he said. “I noticed that the front door was open, that was where the smoke was coming from.”
Tharp says they had the fire knocked down within four minutes of arriving after seeing the body of fire in the kitchen.
“The first engine placed their attack line through the garage, into the kitchen,” said Tharp.
The home also had smoke damage throughout the first floor and water damage in the basement. The family is staying elsewhere while repairs are being made.
The department’s fire investigator remained at the scene for nearly four hours.
Tharp says the cause, for now, is being listed as undetermined but possibly electrical.
