Local groups hosting hurricane relief collections
NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (Oct. 9, 2024) – The community is continuing to support those impacted by Hurricane Helene.
The New Philadelphia Municipal Court’s probation department is hosting a donation drive the next two Fridays from 8 am to 6 pm at their office next to the police station. Probation Officer Mindy Craig says needed items include baby formula and diapers, toilet paper, hygiene products, cleaning supplies, and other household essentials.
“We have made contact with a church, and they’re actually located in Asheville, North Carolina, but they have a warehouse that is about an hour outside of Asheville that we are going to be delivering all the donations we receive to.”
They’re also collecting coats, gloves, and other warm winter gear.
“I’ve got a contact with Pastor Jim Manbeck at Roxford Church. They’re also doing a drive so we’re trying to collaborate with them as far as hauling everything down at the same time, and he said that they’re looking for even hand warmers. They’re looking for blankets.”
Supplies can also be dropped off at the Mineral City Fire Station during designated times through October 26th. There’s a flier with details on the fire department’s Facebook page. Chief Sam Moore says he and several other firefighters plan to leave the following week to deliver the items to wherever they’re useful.
“We know that they need help down there. We’ve all been watching TV and everything, and we all got together and wanted to do something.”
The fire department has one of its frozen food and grocery auctions Saturday beginning at 3 pm. Moore says proceeds from that will buy additional supplies for the cause.
