Man Charged for Girlfriend’s Shooting in New Philadelphia Makes First Court Appearance

| June 2, 2026

NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (June 2, 2026) – A man accused of shooting his girlfriend in New Philadelphia has made his first appearance in court.

Twenty-five-year-old Zachary Gill, who is listed with a Mahoning County address, appeared Monday in New Philadelphia Municipal Court on multiple charges, including attempted murder.

Gill’s bond was set at $500,000.

According to police, the shooting occurred on May 22 but was not reported immediately. Authorities say they only learned of the incident four days later, when the victim sought treatment at a hospital for a gunshot wound.

New Philadelphia Police Captain David Morris said officers initially attempted to arrest Gill last Friday at a residence on 11th Street Northwest, with assistance from multiple agencies, including the Ohio State Highway Patrol and special response teams from Tuscarawas and Coshocton counties.

Gill was not found at that location. Authorities later determined he was at a home on Karen Drive, where he surrendered peacefully.

Morris says that the large law enforcement presence — involving more than 20 officers — was necessary given the seriousness of the charges and concerns for the safety of officers and neighbors.

Gill is scheduled to return to municipal court for a preliminary hearing Wednesday morning. He is currently being held in the Tuscarawas County Jail.
