More online fraud complaints reported in Tuscarawas County
NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (April 8, 2026) — Sheriff’s officials are again urging residents to verify sellers and service providers before sending money after receiving multiple new fraud complaints this week.
Deputies were notified of two additional scam reports on Tuesday, including one incident in which a Newcomerstown man narrowly avoided a significant financial loss.
Just before 5 p.m., the man reported that he was nearly scammed out of $24,000, supposedly by Apple. The attempted transaction was flagged by the victim’s bank, which froze the account and prevented any loss.
About 30 minutes later, a Lawrence Township man reported losing approximately $300 to a scammer posing as a Verizon representative. The victim was unable to provide additional information about the suspect.
The latest reports follow a couple other fraud complaints earlier in the week. In one case, a Magnolia woman was tricked into sending two $45 payments to someone posing as a plumber on Facebook. In a separate online scam, a Bolivar man reported losing $400.
All of the incidents remain under investigation. Sheriff’s officials are reminding residents to use caution when making payments, particularly when contacted unexpectedly, and to confirm the legitimacy of individuals or companies requesting money.
