Morning fire destroys garage, tractor in Goshen Township

| April 19, 2022

GOSHEN TWP. (WJER) (April 19, 2022) – New Philadelphia firefighters say a blaze ended up destroying a detached garage east of town this morning.

Assistant Chief Matt Tharp says a passerby discovered the fire and alerted the owner in the 1500 block of Tabor Ridge Road Northeast shortly after 6:30 a.m.

We arrived on scene at 6:45 and found a pretty much two-and-a-half-story garage fully involved with heavy flames out of the roof,” he said.

Tharp says the garage was a few car lengths away from the home, which they managed to spray to keep cool and minimize damage.

They had some melted siding. I believe it might have been the kitchen window cracked because of the heat. But other than that, it was fine,” said Tharp.

Tharp says there were no vehicles in the garage, but he is still estimating the damage could be as much as $150,000.

The garage itself was a total loss and they lost a tractor also in the fire that was sitting beside the garage,” he said.

Tharp says the cause is under investigation though not believed to be suspicious.

Firefighters remained on the scene for over two hours.

Dover and Uhrichsville departments assisted.
