Mosquito spraying to take place around KSU Tusc Tuesday

NEW PHILADELPHIA – The New Philadelphia Health Department will spray for mosquitoes within a 1-mile radius of the Kent State Tuscarawas campus on Tuesday night, Sept. 16.
Health officials say a mosquito sample collected there on Aug. 20 tested positive for West Nile virus. T
he city and county health departments have sprayed for mosquitoes several times this summer because of a few positive West Nile mosquito samples. They have not reported any cases in humans.
Health officials say 80 percent of people who contract the virus do not develop symptoms. Less than 1 percent of those who do develop severe conditions.
The health departments has also sprayed for mosquitos this summer because of high mosquito counts and the rare La Crosse virus, another mosquito-borne illness that hospitalized two Tuscarawas County residents in July.
