New Philadelphia Celebrates Completion of Downtown Quadrants Redesign
NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (Sept. 23, 2026) – New Philadelphia marked the end of its downtown quadrants redesign project this afternoon with a ribbon-cutting ceremony that brought together city, county, and state leaders along with community members.
The $2.9-million project, funded through Governor Mike DeWine’s Appalachian Community Grant Program using federal ARPA dollars, began 14 months ago.
Mayor Joel Day says the upgrades — including a new covered stage on the northwest quadrant and new tables, chairs, benches, and gathering areas across all three redesigned quadrants — open the door to more community use and activity.
State Representative Jodi Salvo offered congratulations on behalf of the Ohio House, the 136th General Assembly, and Speaker Matt Huffman.
State Senator Al Landis presented a senate proclamation and reflected on past celebrations downtown, including the nation’s bicentennial in 1976.
The ceremony also featured a performance by New Philadelphia Delphian Chorale students and remarks from Governor’s Office of Appalachia Director John Carey, Service Director Ron McAbier, and others who helped bring the project to completion.
