New Philadelphia man back in jail after allegedly assaulting deputies
NEW PHILADELPHIA – A Tuscarawas County man’s recent string of run-ins with the law culminated on Monday with charges of assaulting multiple deputies and a mugshot showing visible facial injuries.
David Hochstetler, 34, of New Philadelphia is in the Tuscarawas County Jail with bail set at $25,000. He’s charged with two felony counts of assault, felony attempted assault and resisting arrest.
Capt. Travis Stocker with the Sheriff’s Office says deputies responded to Hochstetler’s Wainwright Road Southeast address after he allegedly cut off his ankle monitor. He had been out of jail on his own recognizance in a separate burglary case from late July.
Stocker says Hochstetler threw his ankle monitor out the front door and said he was ready to go to jail. As deputies handcuffed him, Stocker says Hochstetler allegedly headbutted one deputy, attempted to knee another in the groin, then kicked another deputy as they put him in leg restraints.
Stocker says the deputies are OK. He says the black eye and scratches in Hochstetler’s mugshot were the result of his own actions while struggling during the arrest attempt.
Hochstetler has a preliminary hearing scheduled for Aug. 19 in the assault case. The burglary case has been referred to the Tuscarawas County Grand Jury. In that case, Hochstetler is accused of stealing a rooster. Hochstetler is also due in Southern District Court on Sept. 1 for a pre-trial in a soliciting case from July 13.
