New Philadelphia man indicted for August crash that killed passenger

NEW PHILADELPHIA (Oct. 13, 2025) (WJER) – A Tuscarawas County grand jury has indicted a New Philadelphia man accused of racing and crashing his car into a telephone pole while intoxicated and leaving behind a dead passenger.

The charges now against 37-year-old Janesh Cabrera-Vargas include two counts of aggravated vehicular homicide, two counts of OVI, and one count of failure to stop after an accident for the crash that claimed the life of 21-year-old Terron Henderson of New Philadelphia. It happened about 2 a.m. on August 23rd along South Broadway near Hilan Avenue Southwest.

New Philadelphia Police Chief Tessa Pohovey told us at the time Cabrera-Vargas allegedly ran from the crash scene, but officers caught him a short time later. Speed and alcohol were believed to be factors in the crash.

Cabrera-Vargas remains in the Tuscarawas County Jail. Bond was previously set at $50,000. No court dates have been listed yet on the new charges. The courts are closed today for Columbus Day.
