New tornado sirens installed near Strasburg
STRASBURG (WJER) (Dec. 31, 2024) – The storm warning system for Strasburg and Franklin Township has tripled in size.
Fire Chief Jason Ely says two new tornado sirens went up recently: one near ProVia and the other along Yackey Drive.
“We’re currently working with Staley Technologies to get those tied into the 911 dispatch system. Our dispatch system down at the sheriff’s office, they will have the capability of setting those off.”
The Reeves and Rosenberry foundations contributed a combined $50,000 that paid for one of the sirens. The village and township then split the cost of the other.
“They should be doing a monthly test, I believe, and in the event there is any tornado activity – and it goes countywide – our dispatch center has the capabilities to set off every tornado siren in the county that’s tied in with their system.”
Before this, if there was a tornado threat Strasburg firefighters had to stop what they were doing and return to the fire station to activate that siren, which was the only one between the two communities.
