NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (Feb. 14, 2022) – The city’s fire department calling on the community to help the family whose home caught on fire this morning.

Chief Jim Parrish says they’re accepting pre-paid Visa gift cards for the two adults and two children displaced by the fire that caused extensive damage to the two-story home in the 400-block of Union Avenue Northwest.

“If they would drop it off at the fire station, we’ll certainly get it to the family to help them get clothing and some of the immediate needs that they have.”

Parrish says everyone escaped unharmed before firefighters arrived shortly after 8:30 am to find heavy flames in the basement extending through the ceiling to the first floor of the two-story home.

“They did have a cat that did not survive, but everyone else was out of the home.”

Parrish says firefighters remained on scene for several hours after extinguishing the blaze checking for hot spots and hidden flames. The State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating but could not immediately determine the cause.
