NP School Board opposes Ohio House Bill requiring citizenship reporting

| February 11, 2026

NEW PHILADELPHIA – The New Philadelphia School Board is opposing state legislation that would require school districts to report the citizenship or immigration status of their students to the federal government.

The School Board on Monday unanimously approved a resolution opposing Ohio House Bill 42, which is being discussed in committee.

School Board member and State House candidate Amanda Fontana says the Board’s concern is the safety of students.

“It creates a serious threat to safety by forcing the district to put students at risk,” she said.

House Bill 42 would require certain agencies, including schools, jails and JFS to report the immigration status of the people they come in contact with. The Ohio House and Senate would have to approved it before it goes to the governor’s desk for a final signature.
