ODOT selects roundabouts to improve traffic on US 62/SR 39 near Berlin
NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (Feb. 26, 2026) – The Ohio Department of Transportation has chosen its plan to ease congestion and improve safety along the U.S. 62 and State Route 39 corridor just west of Berlin in Holmes County.
ODOT says it will build two single‑lane roundabouts at County Road 201 and State Route 557. Spokeswoman Lauren Borell says engineers reviewed several options, including extra turn lanes and new traffic signals, before ultimately choosing roundabouts following a public open house and community feedback.
She says the design takes into account concerns about buggy and e‑scooter traffic in the area. ODOT began studying the corridor back in 2021 after a request from the Holmes County Commissioners.
Construction of those roundabouts is scheduled for 2028. These projects come on the heels of another roundabout announced last month, set for east of this stretch at State Route 39 and County Road 114 near Walnut Creek—also planned for 2028. Borell says ODOT will also launch an outreach effort to help drivers get ready as these projects approach.
Residents can continue submitting feedback through March 22 on potential social, environmental, and economic impacts.
