Passenger dies following May 13 crash near Newcomerstown

| June 11, 2025

NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (June 11, 2025) – The State Highway Patrol says a crash from last month on U.S 36 involving a collision between two oncoming vehicles trying to turn on to I-77 south at the same time has since turned fatal.

The patrol says it learned this week that 83-year-old Judy Mizer of West Lafayette died from injuries sustained as a passenger in the May 13th crash.

Lt. Johnnie Maier says Mizer was in an eastbound car driven by her husband, 85-year-old Ralph Mizer.

Their vehicle struck the side of a westbound car that allegedly turned in front of them, driven by 26-year-old Jonathon Engle of Cambridge.

Maier says Engle at the time was cited and found guilty of failure to yield, driving with a suspended license, and a seatbelt violation.

The county prosecutor will now consider additional charges, possibly including aggravated vehicular homicide.
