MILL TWP. (WJER / WTUZ) (April 2, 2025)  – The State Highway Patrol New Philadelphia post is investigating a fatal plane crash near Midvale that killed the pilot who was flying solo.

It happened in a farm field in Mill Township, just across the Tuscarawas River from Five Waters Golf Course Tuesday shortly after 5 p.m.

Post Commander Lt. Johnnie Maier says the small 1973 Cessna plane reportedly took off from Harry Clever Field in New Philadelphia at 4:40 p.m.

Maier says they’re not able to release the pilot’s name, due to the severity of the crash.  He says the coroner’s office needs to verify the identity.

Golf course employee Bart Haswell was working when this took place. He didn’t see it, but he did hear the plane’s engine cutting out and then the crash itself.

Haswell says golfers who did witness the crash told him the plane nosedived to the ground.

The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are also investigating Tuesday’s plane crash.
