Both of the Rockets basketball teams – Maroon and Silver – traveled to Ashtabula to open their 2022-23 basketball seasons Saturday.
The Rockets Maroon team was down 18-4 at halftime but managed to pull together to score 16 points in the second half. The final score was 30 to 20 against a tough defensive team.
Leading the Rockets were Allison Halsey and Kadyn Cook-Linamen. Allison scored 6 points, grabbed 14 rebounds, and had 11 steals and 4 assists. Kadyn scored 4 points, grabbed 16 rebounds, and recorded 3 steals and 3 blocks.
The Rockets Silver team maintained a steady lead throughout a very physical game. At the end of the game, they won by a score of 70-46.
Offensively, the Rockets were led by Matthew Medley with 22 points. Aidan McClain and Alex Adkins both added 16 points for the Rockets, and Zach Dryden scored 12 points. Gary Calkins and Chris Wernert both added baskets for the Rockets.
Adding to the Rockets Silver team’s efforts, Dryden pulled down 15 rebounds and had 4 assists and 1 steal. Steve Hazelip pulled down 12 rebounds and had 4 assists. Medley had 11 rebounds, 5 assists, and 5 steals for the Rockets. McClain had 11 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 block. Adkins had 5 steals, 5 assists, and 5 rebounds. Wernert pulled down 5 boards, had 2 steals and 1 block. Calkins had 4 rebounds, 3 steals, and 1 assist.
The Rockets Maroon team will have their season opener on Thursday, Dec. 15, at 6 p.m. at Strasburg High School. Both Rockets Maroon and Rockets Silver will be in action on Saturday, Dec. 17, at 12:30 and 2 p.m. against tough HIlliard Bobcats teams at Strasburg High School.
