Scammer posed as ‘Geek Squad’ agent, got away with nearly $20,000

| May 9, 2025

NEW PHILADELPHIA – A Newcomerstown area woman was frauded out of nearly $20,000 this week.

Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Captain Adam Fisher says the investigation is ongoing, but it appears someone pretending to be from the Geek Squad emailed the woman. She called a phone number on that email and was convinced that she owed the Geek Squad $19,570.

Fisher says the woman took the money out of the bank account and handed it to someone posing as an agent at the nearby Dollar General parking lot.

Fisher encourages people to be vigilant when dealing with unsolicited emails and phone calls.

“If you receive an email or a phone call from something or someone that you do not feel is legitimate, please call us. Call us anytime at the Sheriff’s Office. Let us investigate. Let us help you work through that because we are seeing a lot of these fraud cases come through our office. Individuals are increasingly being frauded out of their own hard-earned money.”

Other recent fraud cases include a New Philadelphia man who was scammed out of nearly $13,000 when he thought he was bidding on a John Deer tractor.
