Shelter-in-Place Lifted After Gas Leak in York Township
YORK TOWNSHIP (WJER) (Aug. 21, 2026) — A shelter-in-place order issued Thursday for four homes in York Township was lifted after a few hours when crews repaired a natural gas leak near the 2000 block of Scenic View Road SW.
The leak was discovered shortly before 11 a.m. at a well in the area. Tuscarawas County emergency officials said no injuries were reported.
Residents within a half-mile of the well were told to stay indoors, shut off air conditioning, close windows and avoid smoking while the leak was being addressed.
EMA Director Jennifer James said the York Township fire chief issued the order, and the Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office relayed the alerts. James also posted on Facebook after some residents believed the order applied to a larger area.
The order was lifted before 3 p.m. Officials have not said what caused the leak or when it began.
