Rush Twp. (WJER) (March 12, 2024) – The Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office is asking for help in tracking down the person responsible for shooting two dogs – one fatally – near Gnadenhutten over the weekend.

Captain Travis Stocker says the owner in the 10000 block of Gilmore Rd SE reported late Saturday afternoon that his two dogs had gone into the woods chasing squirrels. One returned with apparent gunshot wounds to its backside, the other was later found dead with a shotgun shell next to it.

“The brother of the owner of the dogs had located the deceased dog in the woods behind his residence on Watson Creek Road,” Stocker said.

Stocker says deputies spoke with two neighbors who denied having any involvement.

“At this point, there’s not enough evidence to say definitively who committed this crime,” he said.

Stocker wants anyone who heard or saw anything to come forward.

“I know the owners of the dogs would be greatly appreciative to that, and we’d like to get this taken care of for them,” said Stocker.

Stocker says the dog that made it home was an unknown-type breed that was taken to an emergency vet. He did not have an update on its condition. Stocker says the dog that died appeared to be a lab.
