NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (Sept. 4, 2024) – A 27-year-old Uhrichsville man has now been indicted for attempted murder for a shooting that took place in New Philadelphia at the end of June.

The Tuscarawas County Grand Jury has indicted Chance Swaney on eight counts, including attempted murder, a first-degree felony. He is in the Tuscarawas County Jail awaiting a September 17th arraignment in front of Common Pleas Court Judge Elizabeth Thomakos.

New Philadelphia Police say Swaney shot a 41-year-old woman two or three times with a 22-caliber handgun following a vehicle crash at the intersection of Commercial and Goshen avenues on June 26th. Police say Swaney and the woman were in different vehicles and were involved in a botched drug deal and a car chase that happened prior to the crash and shooting.

New Philadelphia Police arrested Swaney at the scene.

The woman was placed on a ventilator before her condition stabilized.
