Troopers investigate roadway shooting call, suspect fireworks were possibly to blame

| July 9, 2024

NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (July 9, 2024) – The State Highway Patrol reported a relatively safe Fourth of July holiday weekend on the roads, with one incident that kept them busy but ultimately may have been a wild goose chase.

New Philadelphia Post Commander Lt. Johnnie Maier says they were contacted Sunday night about somebody shooting out of a vehicle at a motorcycle on East High Avenue.

However, he says it might have just been fireworks as they found no witnesses, victims, or other evidence to confirm the caller’s story.

He says sheriff’s deputies and New Philadelphia police officers were searching the area for a small BMW or Mercedes, but they found nothing to suggest there was a shooting at the reported location near Five Barrel Bullet Brewing Company.
