NEW PHILADELPHIA – The State Highway Patrol is investigating a one vehicle crash that killed a Bowerston man Saturday in Goshen Township. Sgt. Clinton Armstrong of the New Philadelphia post says it happened at approximately 5:25 p.m.

“A silver 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche driven by William C. Oiler, age 58, of Bowerston, Ohio, was traveling westbound on state Route 39 near milepost 17. The Chevrolet traveled off the right side of the roadway, striking a utility pole and two parked vehicles.”

Armstrong says Mr. Oiler was transported from the scene to Union Hospital then transferred to Akron General. Medical personnel there pronounced him dead on Sunday morning.

Armstrong says the crash remains under investigation. The coroner will determine the cause of death. Armstrong says the initial investigation shows no indication that speed, drugs or alcohol were a factor. Mr. Oiler was wearing a seatbelt.

The crash knocked down power lines and closed the road for a period of time Saturday afternoon.

The highway patrol was helped on scene by the New Philadelphia Fire Department, ODOT, Rosenberry Towing and Metro LifeFlight.
