Tuesday afternoon blaze guts Dennison area home

| August 14, 2024

MILL TWP. (WJER) (Aug. 14, 2024) – Dennison firefighters say grease left unattended on a stove was to blame for a blaze that significantly damaged a double-wide modular home southeast of the Twin City area Tuesday afternoon.

Chief Dave McConnell says they were sent to the 8500 block of Latto Rd SE around 3:20 p.m. for an appliance fire that was quickly upgraded as it extended to the cupboard above the stove and spread from there.

“We arrived on scene and there was just a slight little haze of smoke around the roof area,” he said.

McConnell says he found his way under the smoke to the kitchen where they had the fire out in a matter of minutes, but it still gutted the residence because of the intense heat contained by the metal roofing and siding.

He believes the total damage estimate could be as much as $150,000.

“It literally melted like everything,” said McConnell.

McConnell says the 81-year-old man who lived alone at the home had family down the road he could stay with.  He wasn’t injured. McConnell says the man’s insurance company was sending an investigator out to do an assessment.

Uhrichsville and Warwick Township firefighters also responded along with Smith Ambulance and the Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office.
