Tuesday East High crash apparently caused by medical issue

NEW PHILADELPHIA – Police believe a medical issue led to a head-on crash on East High Avenue in front of the airport that sent both drivers to the hospital Tuesday afternoon.
State Highway Patrol Trooper Travis Adkins says a westbound Mercury Sable went left of center and struck a Jeep Cherokee head-on around 1:30 p.m. He said both drivers were wearing their seatbelts and he did not believe their injuries were life threatening. The woman driving the Cherokee was initially taken to Union Hospital then flown by helicopter to Akron General.
The 63-year-old New Philadelphia man who drove the Sable that went left of center was driven by ambulance to Mercy Medical Center, accompanied by his wife. She was a passenger but Adkins said she did not appear to be seriously injured.
Adkins says both vehicles were totaled. He was still collecting information and interviewing the drivers Wednesday morning. The at-fault driver could be charged with going left of center, but Adkins was still reviewing possible charges considering the driver’s medical condition when we spoke to him.
