TuscBDD asking for help furnishing tech house

| June 24, 2024

DOVER (WJER) (June 24, 2024) – Individuals with disabilities will soon have a place they can stay overnight to see how they can live more independently with technology.

TuscBDD Superintendent Nate Kamban says they’re partnering with Starlight Enterprises to outfit a house that agency owns with cameras, a communication system staff can use to check in, voice-activated appliances, and more.

“I know a concern often is what happens to my loved one as I age or if I’m not able to care for them. We’re really seeing this progression where people can venture out and live independently with the help of these type of things.”

A grant helped pay for the technology, but Kamban says they’re still in need of new or gently used furniture and other household necessities to make guests’ stay more comfortable.

“We’ve talked to a lot of interested partners. Several furniture stores said they’d get back to us, that they’re happy to help, and we’ve already got a landscaping company that would like to help as well but the more the merrier to get this thing up and running.”

Anyone wanting to contribute should contact Facilities Director Drew Litty at 330-339-8714 or dlitty@tusbdd.org. Kamban says they’re hoping to have an open house sometime in August and have people start staying there shortly after.
