Uhrichsville Council Rejects Repayment to Landlords
Uhrichsville (WJER) (June 1, 2026) – City Council has voted against paying a proposed settlement tied to the city’s illegal landlord registration fees.
A court ruled in December 2024 that the fees were collected illegally, and a class-action lawsuit was filed soon after seeking repayment.
Last August, council agreed with Mayor Jim Zucal that the fees should be repaid and authorized Merklin to pursue a settlement totaling about $99,250 for roughly 300 landlords.
After an executive session Thursday night, council voted to reject the payout. Bob Baker and Scott Whitman voted in favor of repaying the landlords.
Council members did not explain their votes.
Merklin says he will notify the judge and attorneys of council’s decision, but he is not sure what happens next.
