Victim identified in fatal Dover house fire
DOVER (WJER) (Jan. 21, 2026) — Authorities have released the name and cause of death of the victim in last Friday’s house fire on South Johnson Avenue in Dover.
The Tuscarawas County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as 73-year-old Gregory Beitzel. His death was ruled accidental, with smoke inhalation listed as the cause.
Dover Fire Captain Mike Mossor said crews were dispatched to the scene at approximately 12:40 p.m. after receiving a report of smoke in the area. When firefighters arrived, a bystander informed first responders that someone might still be inside the home.
Beitzel was transported to Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The Dover Fire Department, along with local police and the Ohio State Fire Marshal’s Office, investigated the fire to determine its origin. Officials said the incident was not considered suspicious.
According to Toland-Herzig Funeral Home, there will be no calling hours or services for Beitzel. He is survived by two children and five grandkids.
