UHRICHSVILLE (WJER) (April 24, 2023) – A city neighborhood is safer now thanks to the efforts through the American Red Cross.

WJER radio joined along as volunteers installed 119 smoke alarms for free at 50 homes in the West First, Third, and Fourth street areas Saturday morning.  Local Disaster Action Team Coordinator Arden Tohill says it was part of the “Sound the Alarm” program.

“The Sound the Alarm program has been going on about 10 years. It was actually started in Cleveland and has become a national program now.”

But team member Mahogany Coward of Canton says it’s a push that’s been going on even longer, locally.

“We are dedicated. It’s 30 years into our smoke alarms. We’ve been doing this for 30 years this year – 2023 – and it’s a wonderful opportunity to save a life.”

Homes that did not receive a free smoke detector can still contact the Red Cross to schedule an appointment to have one installed.
