DOVER TWP (WJER) (Sept. 7, 2023) – The New Philadelphia Highway Patrol Post is investigating a Thursday afternoon crash that shut down part of I-77.
Officials there say a southbound Hyundai Elantra traveled off the left side of the road near the Schneider’s Crossing exit around 12:20 pm, went across the median and struck a Nissan Armada head-on before overturning in the northbound lanes. The 30-year-old Dover man driving the Elantra sustained serious injuries and was taken by ambulance to Mercy hospital. The other driver – a 41-year-old man from Willowick – was treated at the scene.
Investigators believe weather may have played a role in the crash that happened during a downpour. No alcohol or drug use is suspected, and both drivers were wearing seatbelts.
ODOT closed the northbound lanes between the Dover exit and the crash scene for about an hour and a half.
