Wedding reception guest jailed for alleged drunken combative behavior with gun

| August 27, 2024

NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (Aug. 27, 2024) – Tuscarawas County Sheriff Orvis Campbell says it’s fortunate nobody was injured after an Akron man was arrested for allegedly being drunk and combative with a gun at a wedding reception in Union Township Sunday night.

Campbell says it started when two members of the wedding party attempted to prevent the 21-year-old suspect from driving home, but he instead pulled out a pistol and threatened to shoot them. He says the two men were able to hold the suspect down until deputies arrived.

“That’s one of those things where this guy just was 21 years old and young, irresponsible, and it probably could have ended up very tragic because at that point I’m not sure if he realized how irrational he was being,” said Campbell.

He says the suspect was carrying a 9mm pistol in his holster at the reception.

“You can’t consume alcohol and have a weapon on you at the same time. And that goes for everybody, even law enforcement,” Campbell said.

Campbell says the man was taken to jail and is facing charges of disorderly conduct, aggravated menacing, and using weapons while intoxicated.
