NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (Oct. 15, 2024) – Alcohol is now allowed in designated cups during certain events downtown.

Sunday’s installment of Art on the Alley was the first to take place in the city’s newly established Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area (DORA). Mayor Joel Day was asked about it during Monday’s city council meeting.

Councilman Mitch Pace: “Yesterday was our first event with DORA. Did we have any issues yesterday?”

Day: “No issues. None at all.”

Business owner Jim Knisely with the NPact group was contacting DORA participants to find out how many cups they sold during the event.

Councilman Tom Simmelink: “I personally didn’t see anybody drinking but I’m sure there were some.”

Day: “The report I got from [Knisely] was that there were a handful of people.”

Art on the Alley organizers say Sunday’s event was the most well-attended to date, rivaling the crowd at First Fridays in downtown Canton.
