Cleanup continues after destructive winds rip through Tuscarawas County

| March 16, 2026

NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (March 16, 2026)Cleanup efforts have been ongoing across Tuscarawas County after Friday’s destructive high winds damaged buildings, downed trees and utility lines, and caused widespread power outages.

Roofs were torn off the Broadway Brewhouse in New Philadelphia and Superior Clay in Uhrichsville, while first responders spent hours dealing with storm‑related incidents, including brush fires and roadway hazards. A semi truck even tipped over on the I‑77 north on‑ramp in New Philadelphia.

New Philadelphia Fire Chief Jim Parrish says his department handled roughly 30 calls between Friday lunchtime and Saturday afternoon — but fortunately, no serious injuries were reported.

In Sugarcreek, Fire Chief John Meek oversaw the response to a snapped power pole that brought down utility lines and street lights, shutting down State Route 39 for several hours.

The National Weather Service recorded wind gusts up to 65 miles per hour at Harry Clever Field. According to PowerOutage.US, just under 2,500 customers in Tuscarawas County remain without power – as of 5:30 this morning, and AEP expects most service to be restored by 6 p.m.

Another high wind advisory remains in effect until 11 this morning, with thunderstorms possible. Temperatures are expected to drop sharply later today, bringing a chance of snow tonight.
