Claymont Board Votes to Close Intermediate School, Restructure Grade Levels
UHRICHSVILLE (WTUZ) (April 1, 2026) – The Claymont City School District Board of Education has voted to consolidate its schools and close Claymont Intermediate School at the end of this school year.
The decision was made during a special board meeting Tuesday night following an executive session.
Board member Solomon Peters made the motion to approve the consolidation plan.
Under the plan, beginning in the 2026–27 school year, eighth‑grade students will attend Claymont High School, fourth‑ and fifth‑grade students will move to the middle school, and third graders will attend the elementary school.
Michelle Wolf cast the lone opposing vote. Board member Lois Grandison was not in attendance.
Superintendent Brian Rentsch says plans for a high school addition are still pending while the district waits for a ruling on an inside millage switch and property tax. Some minimal staffing changes are also expected.
District officials cite declining enrollment and rising building costs following state funding cuts as the reason for the move.
The intermediate school building will eventually be sold or auctioned, with its contents moving along with students and staff – but not anytime soon, as it currently houses the district’s fiber hub.
