Youth-Led Effort Highlights Take Down Tobacco Day
NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (April 6, 2026) — Officials with Empower Tusc and the Tuscarawas County Health Department are receiving added support this month in their effort to keep tobacco out of the hands of local youth.
The Tuscarawas County Commissioners proclaimed April 1 as Take Down Tobacco Day, recognizing a nationwide, youth-led initiative focused on preventing youth tobacco and nicotine use while encouraging healthier, tobacco-free communities.
The proclamation included a presentation by four students from Tuscarawas Central Catholic, who shared anti-tobacco public service announcements and posters created as part of a school competition. The students’ work highlighted the impact young voices can have in tobacco prevention efforts.
Empower Tusc Coordinator Terri Miller said the presentation demonstrated the power of youth leadership in shaping healthier habits and influencing community awareness.
Health Department educator Lana Schrock said Take Down Tobacco Day encourages communities to take an active role in preventing young people from using tobacco and nicotine products. She added that the health department appreciates the commissioners’ public support of the campaign.
Take Down Tobacco Day is held annually across the country and focuses on protecting future generations from the dangers of tobacco and nicotine use.
