DOVER TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WJER) (April 27, 2026) — Firefighters in Dover worked Saturday to contain a crude oil leak near Brandywine Creek, preventing the spill from spreading further into the surrounding environment.

According to Lt. Shane Wells, the leak originated from a storage tank located near State Route 39 and Pyle Road, roughly 50 feet from the creek. Officials estimate that about half of the tank’s 4,000-gallon capacity may have seeped into the ground, possibly due to corrosion.

Emergency crews deployed absorbent booms at multiple points along Brandywine Creek to contain the oil and limit its movement. Authorities said it remains unclear how much of the crude oil reached the waterway.

Wells said initial assessments suggest the environmental impact would be minimal overall, noting that no fish kills have been reported.

The well operator told responders the tank had been full just a few days before the leak was discovered.

Firefighters remained on scene for approximately four hours as containment efforts continued. Officials also confirmed that the nearby Norma Johnson Center was not affected by the incident.
