COLUMBUS (WJER) (June 30, 2026) – Governor Mike DeWine and the Ohio Emergency Management Agency are urging residents to take precautions as Ohio is facing a dangerous stretch of extreme heat this week. Temperatures will climb into the mid‑90s, with humidity pushing the heat index well above 100 degrees. Overnight lows will stay in the 70s, offering little relief, and the heatwave is expected to last through Thursday.

Health officials warn that older adults, young children, people with chronic conditions, outdoor workers, athletes, and anyone without air conditioning face the highest risk.

The Ohio EMA reminds residents to watch for signs of heat illness—heavy sweating, cramps, headaches, dizziness, nausea, or a fast heartbeat. They recommend staying in air‑conditioned spaces, drinking plenty of water, avoiding outdoor activity during peak sun hours, and checking on vulnerable neighbors. Those without air conditioning can call 2‑1‑1 to find cooling centers.

Pet owners are urged to keep animals indoors or in shaded areas, provide fresh water, and be mindful of hot pavement. And officials stress that no one—pets or people—should ever be left in a parked car.

EMA Director Sima Merick says simple steps like staying hydrated and planning cooling options can help Ohioans “stay safe and beat the heat.”
