4th of July deputy-involved shooting incident under investigation
NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (July 5, 2024) – The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation is investigating a Fourth of July evening incident where two Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s deputies shot a Wainwright man who allegedly pointed a gun at them on his property.
According to a press release from Tuscarawas County Sheriff Orvis Campbell, nobody else was injured in the shooting that happened in the 1900 block of Wainwright Road at about 9:30 p.m. The 41-year-old man who was shot was struck in the arm and leg and taken to Aultman Hospital for injuries that were reported to be non-life-threatening.
Campbell says it started when a neighbor called 9-1-1 about an intoxicated male who appeared to be shooting a gun in the direction of his own home with his wife and kids inside.
The press release says that responding deputies encountered the suspect inside his garage – with the garage door open – and he could be seen with a gun in his hand.
Campbell says the suspect was then shot as he ignored commands to drop the gun and instead pointed it at the deputies. He says the deputies secured the weapon after that and began rendering first aid, which included applying a tourniquet and bandaging his wounds until paramedics arrived.
The suspect’s name is not being released currently.
